Training and Statement
2010 - Doctor of Philosophy, University of Hertfordshire, Hatfield UK
2004 - Master of Arts by Research, University of Hertfordshire, Hatfield UK
2001 - Bachelor of Art, University of Hertfordshire, Hatfield UK
I initially trained and worked as a Civil Engineer where the communication of ideas through drawings was an essential ingredient of the profession. The work also demanded an engagement with the materials, topography and usages of the landscape. I developed an interest in art while at university in Glasgow and for a number of years attended evening and day courses at colleges in London. These courses focused mainly on drawing and introduced me to such concerns as pictorial structure and the use of different graphic marks.
Full-time attendance at art college meant that I could develop a keen interest in the pictorial representation of landscape such that my art practice, developed through both the BA and the work carried out in my practice-based MA and PhD research, has allowed me to explore a landscape aesthetic other than that of the simply pictorial.
My work has been influenced by the industrial, social and agricultural activities that occur in a particular geographically and geologically defined landscape in South East England and how these have impacted on the landscape.
Recent work has concentrated on the experience of walking in various landscapes and is influenced by readings of the landscape writer Robert Macfarlane and the social anthropologist Tim Ingold amongst others. Artists whose work has influenced me include Klimt, Monet, Joan Mitchell, Cy Twombley, Richard Long, and the graphic work of Van Gogh.
I am presently producing a series of etched steel plates together with a series of screen prints that represent the experience of an urban walk, from Euston to Holborn, through a number of London Squares.
